Roman jewellery find provides vital clue: 09 August 2005:

A piece of Roman jewellery discovered on farmland near a Suffolk town has provided archaeologists with a vital clue in determining the existence of a Roman settlement in the area.

The gold earring was found by a metal detector enthusiast working in a field near Bury St Edmunds. The earring dates to the 2nd or 3rd century AD and has recently been declared Treasure Trove by the Greater Suffolk coroner.

Local experts say the find has not only provided them with a piece of valuable evidence but also strengthened the belief that the Romans once lived near the modern-day town of Bury St Edmunds.
